We Know – We’ve Been There Too
In September 2016, I found myself joining other family members and driving from my home in Las Vegas to Palmdale, California, so I could help my 83-year-old great-grandmother take care of my 86-year-old great-grandfather, Patrick J. Leddy. A proud veteran of the Korean War and a retired Battalion Chief for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, he was the toughest man we knew, but he was declining rapidly. He had received a diagnosis of dementia in 2010, and my great-grandmother, Charlene, was his primary caregiver until 2016. Multiple falls and hospital visits, in addition to safety concerns for both of them, made it impossible for my great-grandmother to care for him without assistance. He continued to decline because of his dementia, and after he was hospitalized a few more times with infections, we found ourselves having to support our great-grandmother in making one of the hardest decisions any person has to face. For my great-grandmother and the rest of the family, it simply came down to quality of life and making sure my great-grandfather left this earth with the dignity and respect he had always carried himself with. We decided to move him to a private group home.
My great-grandmother-the sharpest, strongest woman I know-has told me about the guilt she still carries to this day. Guilt for not ensuring her husband was able to live out his golden years in the home he had built with his own hands, close to his family. Guilt for feeling like she couldn't honor her vow to care for him "till death do us part." Guilt for the possibility my great-grandfather felt his loved ones had given up on him. Guilt for feeling angry and frustrated when circumstances got really tough. These are all perfectly valid and understandable feelings for someone who has lost her best friend, husband, and soulmate.
Ultimately, this is what inspired us to open Assisting Hands Northwest Las Vegas, and it's why we're so passionate about providing high-quality home care throughout the Las Vegas Valley. After our own family's experience with our great-grandfather, we want to be a helpful resource to others navigating similar experiences. In addition, Ray began his life of service to others in the United States Air Force, supporting combat search and rescue efforts all around the world. After leaving active duty, he and Kylie moved to Las Vegas where Ray joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and did his part to patrol this great community. Ray is now dedicated to serving his clients and their families by providing them the best care possible. With our experience combined with compassion, we know firsthand how important it is to keep your loved ones in a safe and familiar environment for as long as possible.

Our process starts with us getting to know more about your loved one, their needs, interests, things they enjoy and like to do, and what’s important to them. Our dedicated care management team works with our clients and their families to develop an in home care plan that is as unique as their loved one. More importantly, you have the freedom to adjust the care plan based on the evolving needs of your loved one.

Beside experience and training, we believe caregivers who make the biggest impact on the lives of our clients are those with a loving heart. I don't know how i would have made it through the forst two weeks after my hips surgery without the help of the caregivers from Assisting Hand. They gave the peace of mind of knowing I'd have someone coming by everyday to help with post-surgery excersis and appointments.
