Your loved one’s home is her domain, so it’s important to respect that fact. Think about how you’d feel if someone came in and rearranged your home without talking to you about it. It’s easy to get carried away as a family caregiver because you just want your loved one to be safe and healthy.
Ask if She’s Having Any Trouble
Open the conversation by asking your loved one if she’s having any trouble finding anything or getting around her home. This is an important part of the conversation and all you have to do is listen carefully to what your loved one tells you. She may let you know about issues you’re not aware of yet, so the more closely you listen, the better. Depending on what she tells you, you may realize that she’s ready for more help, such as home care providers.
Mention to Your Loved One Problems You’ve Noticed
Often the reason that you’re bringing this topic up with your loved one is that you’ve noticed something that strikes you as dangerous. Perhaps your loved one has a fire hazard or there are other issues, such as expired foods in the pantry or fridge. Gently mention the problems you’ve noticed and ask if that’s something your loved one might want help correcting.
Work Within Your Loved One’s Wishes
Your loved one may agree with some of what you express or she may be open to some changes. She may not be open to all of the changes that you feel are necessary, however. Unless the situation becomes dramatically unsafe, you may not be able to make the changes that you want to make without upsetting your loved one. Work with your loved one to figure out the right changes to make now.
This can be a delicate topic to broach with your elderly loved one, so go gently.
