How Dementia Care Can Slow Memory Loss

May 20, 2020Blogmsoltis

We all are forgetful from time to time, and as people age, many will suffer from some form of dementia. However, not all aging seniors encounter the disease despite often being accused of having symptoms. Dementia care experts understand the importance of assessing seniors thoroughly before placing a diagnosis on them. A diagnosis can be just as harmful as helpful. If the diagnosis is incorrect, it may lead both you and your parent to feelings of helplessness even though help is available.

What is Included in Dementia Care

dementia care

Dementia care today involves much more than placating your senior loved one struggling in a downward spiral. Today, dementia care aides are trained to properly care for patients with Alzheimer’s or other form of dementia. They know how to respond to mood swings and agitation with positive reinforcement to lower stress. They will also engage your loved one in stimulating memory exercises to slow the progression of memory loss.

Medication may also be prescribed to improve memory and lessen confusion. These medicines in conjunction with memory exercises and games are conducive to retaining thought patterns and reducing the progression of dementia or Alzheimer’s. The medications used to treat Alzheimer’s in the early to moderate stages are typically cholinesterase inhibitors. This class of drugs is prescribed to treat symptoms related to memory, thinking, language, judgment, and other thought processes.

If dementia care is provided as an all-encompassing process, researchers believe that your parent may be able to have a richer, better-rounded life. Medication, therapy, socialization, active living will help stabilize your parent’s brain and thinking process.
