Home Home Care The Importance of Nutrition for Seniors

The Importance of Nutrition for Seniors

November 26, 2019Home Caremsoltis

at home care services for seniorsNutritional guidelines have changed over the years. When you were a child in your parent’s home, it was mom or dad providing you with a meal plan that was healthy.

Your mom or dad most likely know they should be choosing foods from the food pyramid to maintain their health and wellness. Now that they are aging, and possibly living alone they may have become lax about eating correctly. Home care services can be instrumental in keeping your parent on a proper diet, even when it may not seem important to them.

Providing Proper Nutrition

Over the years there has been controversy over the effectiveness of the food pyramid, leaving many skeptical and choosing to eat by choice of taste rather than by nutritional value. Providers of home care services know that seniors must eat appropriately to maintain their health physically as well as psychologically.

They recommend using guidelines when it comes to nutritional eating.  It is important to lead your mother and father back to a natural diet and guidelines can help reshape their instincts for healthy food. Processed foods, although easy to purchase and prepare, have added ingredients that may be harmful to your parent.  Modern process foods have many chemical additives that for the older person who may be on medications, the chemical mixtures may induce reactions that can cause health concerns.

Additives like sugar, cornstarch, and sodium not only are a cause of weight gain but can increase diabetic and heart rate issues. Sometimes it takes a caregiver to remind our parent that fruits and vegetables are highly recommended for a daily diet. When possible, home care professionals advise that it is best to select organic.

Selecting foods from plants such as nuts and whole grains that are not processed or adjusted chemically may assist and improve digestion.
