Caregiving: A Heart of Service

October 6, 2020Daniellah Salario

As the weather turns crisp and cool and the leaves show their abounding beauty, our bodies crave that favorite comfy sweater, a slower pace, and the warmth of soup for the body and soul.  Our vision shifts from weekend trips to the lake to one that’s inward; toward gratefulness, holidays, and family.  We may have busy days here at Assisting Hands, moving with the changing nature of a new world, but I often marvel at the simplicity of what a home care agency provides.

Create a Feeling of Home Through Caregiving

What exactly is simple about home care? Well, there are no fancy take-out cups, very little special equipment, no heavy boxes to carry, unpack, or assemble.  The caregivers don’t even need expert computer skills. The work of a caregiver is all in the intangible: the way she speaks, responds, interacts, and has the ability to create a feeling of HOME through her words and her hands.

“Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

We look around us and see people rushing from place to place, making to-do lists, crossing them out and thinking twice: how can I possibly find more time for myself? The answer is often in taking a service off their plate. Maybe they hire a cleaning person in their homes, someone to prepare meals, or just do the work of chopping the fruits & veggies.

Have you ever considered the rewards of providing that service go far beyond the monetary compensation? I heard the same refrain from many friends who ordered take-out food during quarantine: I think I like my cooking better!

Is there not a pleasure in the preparation itself, working with your hands and all the while envisioning the smile on the face of someone special? Or, being on the receiving end and sitting in the restaurant, enjoying not only the physical food, but the intangibles of the service from the chef, the waitress, the feeling of being surrounded by our friends and neighbors in the dining room. Now THAT is what truly made that food delectable!

The moment of gratefulness is not only for the patronage of our clients or work of the caregivers, but for the opportunity to create a meaningful, simple, yet, profound connection between a caregiver and individual. A caregiver’s work allows her to put her head on the pillow at the end of the day with a full heart of service. To our clients, you have created a world where anyone can be great because you have opened your home to receiving our care.
