Assisting Hands Home Care is a respite care provider that helps family caregivers who take care of their elderly or disabled relatives in Downers Grove, IL and surrounding areas in DuPage and Cook counties (See All Service Areas). Our caregivers will arrive at scheduled times to seamlessly take over providing care while the family caregiver takes time off.
It is common practice for family members to take care of each other when one falls ill or needs help in old age. However, the modern world offers its own complications that make being a full-time family caregiver very difficult.
Family caregivers typically focus on providing care for their loved ones while their own personal matters become secondary. As a result, they will spend long hours caring for their loved ones which leads to lack of sleep and high stress. They may also spend less time with their immediate family or focusing on their career.
At Assisting Hands Home Care, we do what we can to help with our respite care services. We work with informal caregivers to give them a break on a one-time or recurring basis by providing scheduled respite care for their loved ones in Downers Grove, IL and the surrounding area.
The Difficulties of Informal Caregiving
It may sound strange, but we regularly come across informal caregivers who feel guilty about their desire to take time off from providing care. We want you to know that this is completely normal, and existing data clearly shows why many family caregivers think this way:
- Over 65 million Americans provide informal caregiving services for a loved one as these people feel obligated to care for their family members
- Because of stress, lack of sleep, and similar factors, roughly 25% of these individuals report that they suffer from health complications (e.g. general illnesses, depression, etc.)
These statistics are truly startling and illustrate just how far people will push themselves to care for their loved ones. In many cases, informal caregivers have children of their own, careers, and other obligations in their day-to-day lives. When they then spend a large portion of their free time assisting somebody else, the conditions detailed above are created.
In-Home Respite Care Services
At Assisting Hands Home Care, we encourage informal caregivers to take a break from time to time. For most of our clients, doing so significantly improves their physical and mental health. If you want to take a vacation with your immediate family, our respite caregivers can care for your loved one in need for a few days. If you have work until 5:00PM, we can regularly provide care in the mornings and afternoons. No matter your unique situation, we will work around your schedule to assist as best we can.
The respite care services we provide are non-medical, which means we cannot change bandages or provide injections, for example. We can still assist with medication reminders, preparing meals, toileting, bathing, getting around the home, and similar tasks that aging individuals and others struggle with. We will sit down with you before providing our respite care services to develop an optimal care plan that will provide you and your loved one with peace of mind (See the Full List of Services).
Family caregivers have experienced the following benefits from our respite care services:
- Reduced risk of depression
- More rest and high energy levels
- Less stress
- Regular time off for part of the day or days at a time
