Tips for Encouraging Your Parent to Use Technology on National Technology Day

Senior Care in Loudoun VA

Senior Care in Loudoun VAIn today’s society technology is fairly ubiquitous. Even small children seem to automatically know how to use devices such as tablets and virtually everything is available right on your mobile device. It is important to remember, however, that this technology is not necessary as all-inclusive or as easy to adopt as you might think. Many seniors struggle with understanding not just the technology that is available to them, but how to use it and how to avoid potential dangers associated with it. While your aging parent might not have use for all of the different types of technology that you use on a regular basis, it is likely that some forms could enhance their life. Introducing this technology into their daily routine can help to boost their confidence, stimulate their mind, improve their mental and emotional health, and even make some of your caregiver tasks easier and more effective.

January 6 is National Technology Day. On this day, explore ways that you can introduce your parent to technology and encourage them to use it to their benefit.

Use these tips to encourage your parent to use technology on National Technology Day:

• Gauge their interest. As with anything else in your caregiver journey with your aging parent, the use of technology should be something that is for their benefit and guided by them. This means that you should discuss with them the types of technology that they are interested in learning about and using. Talk to them about the different types of technology that are available or ask them what kinds of goals that they have and then introduce the technology that can help them achieve those goals.

• Think simple. You might not feel as though you could get through a day without your complex smart phone or tablet, but your parent might not have any need for all of the extra functions and applications. Instead, they might prefer a simpler, more straightforward phone designed for basic operations such as making phone calls, sending text messages, and checking email. On the other hand, they might be fascinated by all of the options and want to learn. Start simple and let their interest and understanding guide you from there.

• Review safety. Just as they are not familiar with the types of technology that are available, your parent might not be familiar with the dangers that could occur because of that technology. Make reviewing these dangers and how you can reduce and even eliminate them an important part of your technology discussions. This should include how to set an effective password, what emails they should never open, and how to tell when it is safe to input financial information and when it is not.

Starting senior care for your elderly loved one is an exceptional way to help them achieve and maintain a high quality of life as they age in place. A senior home care services provider can be in the home with your aging parent on a customized schedule that is right for them and their needs, as well as the time and efforts that you are able to put into their care. This means that the care provider will be able to give your parent the personalized level of care, support, assistance, and encouragement that will help them to live the lifestyle that they desire and that you know that they deserve. When it comes to the safe and beneficial use of technology in their daily lives, this care provider can help them to understand not only how to use technology and what it can do for them, but also the potential risks that are involved and how they can avoid them. This can help your parent to reach out, learn more, and benefit from all of the amazing technology that is available to them while also protecting themselves from the potentially serious consequences that can result from these devices and resources.
