How to Set Personal Goals for Yourself as a Family Caregiver

Elderly Care in Palm Beach Gardens FL

Elderly Care in Palm Beach Gardens FLWhen you’re spending a lot of time caring for your elderly loved one, it’s all too easy to forget about yourself. Setting some personal goals for yourself can help you to remember that you’re important, too.

Look at Where You Are

If you’ve decided that it’s time to set some goals for yourself, there’s likely to be one or more areas that you’re not happy about in your own life. Sit down and objectively look at those areas that make you feel less than happy. This isn’t a time to beat yourself up, instead it’s a time to get specific about your current status and what you want to do to change that.

Look at Where You Want to Be

For example, say you aren’t happy with how you eat. You know that you eat too much junk food or just the wrong combinations of foods and you want to change that. It’s one thing to say to yourself you want to change a bad eating habit, but you have to be specific. What kinds of eating habits do you want to have? When you have a solid understanding of your end result desired, you can reach that goal much more easily because you’ve defined it.

Plot out a Course between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be

In the example about eating habits, perhaps you decided that you want to cut out junk food and replace it with more fruits and vegetables. Now you need to map out how you’ll do that. The first step might be to make menus and grocery lists before you go to the store. The next might be to only buy items that are on your list.

Make Time Each Day to Chip Away at Your Goals

No matter what your personal goals are, you won’t necessarily achieve them overnight. It’s a good idea to commit to spending at least a little time every day working toward your goals. If you need more time to yourself to do that, talk to your other family members about spending time with your loved one for you or hiring elderly care providers to do the same. You’ll be much more relaxed and able to concentrate on your own goals when you know your loved one is cared for properly.

You don’t have to tackle all of your goals all at once. Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to meeting your own goals.
