It can feel that you’re quite active enough as a family caregiver, especially if you’re running from task to task from the moment you wake up. But getting just a little more exercise can do you a world of good.
Walk Just a Little Bit More
You’ve probably heard this a million times, but walking is one of the best exercises that you can do every day. If you don’t have a treadmill at home or prefer outdoors for walking, make sure you keep your social distance and wear a protective mask to protect yourself from coronavirus risk.
Add some Stretching
Stretching is another way that you can add good movement to your day. Most people have stiff muscles because we don’t really stretch as much as we should. If you’re feeling really adventurous, take in a yoga class or two. You’ll find that it’s not as complicated as it seems and it does a lot of good for your brain and your body.
Listen to Your Body
You want to be more active, but that doesn’t mean that you have to torture your body. Listen to how it’s responding and reacting to the added exercise. If you’re feeling sore, assess whether you’re actually injured or you need to push through. You don’t want to put yourself at risk for injury because that can affect your ability to fully be present as a caregiver.
Make Exercise a Personal Appointment
For some people, if they don’t have a set time for exercise, they just won’t do it. If that describes you, then it’s time to break out your calendar and figure out when you can exercise. Make the appointment in your calendar and then be sure to keep it.
Talk to Your Doctor
If you haven’t exercised in a while, talk to your doctor. Make sure that you’re healthy enough to be able to exercise. Your doctor can let you know if there are any limitations that you should place on your new exercise regimen. Knowing your limits keeps you in a place of doing good things for your body without overdoing it.
Try making small changes at first, adjusting them as you get used to them.
