6 Locations Where Germs Could Be Hiding

Home Care in Palm Beach Gardens FL

Home Care in Palm Beach Gardens FLColds and viruses spread so quickly because of germs, and germs hide in some surprising spots. If you or your elderly loved one are sick, you might want to know how to reduce the risk of handing the illness back and forth. One of the best ways to avoid that is to get rid of germs in their hiding spaces.

Light Switches

People touch light switches all the time and often forget to clean them. The surface collects a lot of different types of germs, and most people don’t think twice about flipping a light switch off or on. Try to make it a habit to clean switches regularly with all-purpose cleaner when you clean the rest of the house. If anyone in the house is sick, switch to daily cleaning.

Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuum filters and dust cups collect a lot of dirt and dust, but they also collect allergens and germs. They’re also a place that many people forget to clean out. Rinse or change your vacuum filter a couple of times a month and remember to rinse out the dust cup, too. For more coverage from germs and allergens, look for a vacuum that has a HEPA filter.

Door Knobs

Door knobs are just as bad as light switches for collecting germs. They’re thankfully also easy to clean, as long as you can remember to do it. Just as with light switches, try to clean them regularly with all-purpose cleaner and ramp up your cleaning schedule when anyone gets sick.

Pillows and Mattresses

Dust and allergens don’t just collect in the rugs and in the vacuum cleaner, they also live in pillows and mattresses. Bedding is easy to clean in the washing machine, but pillows and mattresses are way more difficult. Look into dust-proof pillow and mattress covers that can keep everything much cleaner. The covers are easy to remove and wash by themselves.

Sponges and Dish Cloths

You probably don’t think twice about using your dish cloths or kitchen sponges to wipe up the counter, but when is the last time they were cleaned? Using the same dish cloth for an entire week or using a sponge until it falls apart probably means that you’ve let a lot of germs build up. Clean dish cloths regularly and sanitize kitchen sponges if you can’t do away with them altogether.

Remote Controls

Remote controls are another one of those objects around the house that everyone touches, but no one really thinks about. It’s not a porous surface, but it can collect and hold onto lots of different types of germs. Wipe them down with antibacterial cloths a few times a week. If anyone is sick, make sure you wipe them down more often.

Once you know where germs are hiding, it’s easier to get a handle on them. Talk to your loved one’s home care providers for other ideas about potential germ collectors in your loved one’s home.
