Senior Care in Boynton Beach FL

Senior Care in Boynton Beach FLIf you have a senior loved one, you may be wondering if they should be getting more physical activity or if it is safe for them to exercise at all. In the news, magazines, health blogs, and more there is a lot of buzz about the health benefits of exercise, especially for those who are over the age of 60. Exercise can have a positive impact on overall health and it can help seniors to manage chronic medical conditions as well as maintain a healthy weight. But, for seniors who have never exercised before or haven’t exercised in a long time, is it safe to start? The truth of the matter is that not exercising is worse for health than exercising in most situations and it is important for seniors to know this. Seniors who are interested in starting an exercise program to improve their health should talk with their doctor first to learn more about which activities to do and how often they should do them. In addition, here are a just a few tips for caregivers who wish to help their senior loved one begin an exercise routine.

Start Simple

For seniors who are new to exercise or who haven’t exercised in a long time, it is not a great idea to jump right in to a complicated or overly challenging exercise routine. Doing too much too fast can lead to injury, frustration, and disappointment. A great activity for new exercisers is walking. Walking is simple, straightforward, and it can be done just about anywhere. Seniors can start by taking a moderately-paced walk around the block and then increasing their distance as they get more comfortable.

Set Attainable Goals

It is great for seniors to have achievable fitness goals. For new exercisers this may mean working up to exercising 4 or 5 days a week from 2 or 3, or working up to walking 2 miles from a half mile. Caregivers can help their senior loved ones to set realistic goals and help them celebrate when those goals are reached.

Ask an Expert

Many fitness and health clubs have knowledgable staff that love to help new exercisers meet their fitness goals. It is a great idea for seniors to meet with a trainer or fitness professional to help them to design a workout routine that is perfect for them and their lifestyle.
