Home Surgery Post-Surgery: Goals of Home-Based Surgical Care

Post-Surgery: Goals of Home-Based Surgical Care

September 20, 2019Surgerymjefferson

post surgical careThere are a lot of things to think about when a loved one is about to have major surgery. After the procedure is complete and recovery has begun, there are even more questions to consider. Is there a risk of falling? What is the medication schedule? Does your loved one need help a few hours a day or require round the clock care? The list can be extensive. That’s when home care is an ideal solution, both for your loved one and you. It can help a patient recover more quickly, keep them safe and avoid another hospital stay. Home care can also provide respite for you, so you can handle the rest of your busy life without worrying about potential accidents, forgotten medication or missed meals.

Although every surgical recovery is different, the goals of home-based post-surgery care are consistent, including family and patient involvement, shared decision-making and flexibility to any changes in plans or protocol. Home care is personalized to fit the needs of the patient and is based on the physician’s instructions, as well as your own preferences and those of your loved one. Services can range from a few hours a day up to 24-hour care and can include the following:

  • Providing medication reminders
  • Preparing meals
  • Light housekeeping
  • Assistance with errands
  • Help with bathing, dressing and grooming
  • Providing respite for family members
  • Communicating progress to family members and healthcare providers
  • Transporting and accompanying a patient to appointments

Outpatient surgery is also becoming more and more common. Patients are often home recovering the same day as their surgery and dealing with weakness, fatigue and pain. It can be extremely challenging for them to perform basic tasks and personal care. Home care is particularly helpful under these circumstances and takes the stress and worry away from family members.

Assisting Hands is ready to help with expertly trained caregivers who ensure the safety and comfort of patients during the challenging post-surgery recovery process. Contact us and we can help make it easier and more comfortable for everyone.
