Home Care in Vienna VA: Resources Seniors Need to Know About

November 30, 2020Blog, Home CareAdmin
Assisting Hands of Potomac Home Carein-home care is one of the top providers of residential home care in Reston, Vienna and Northern Fairfax County, VA. In this article, we discuss a variety of choices and financial resources to help you finance the home care you or a loved one may need. Advance planning can make a big difference in what you pay for care. And planning ahead also helps control the stress some may feel about upcoming circumstances.

By the way, this article from Age In Place is a good reference article on advanced planning and what seniors should know. Here’s a summary.

Home Care Resources Seniors in VA and MD Should Know

Essentially, the more you know, the easier home healthcare can be. There are many state and local options to consider. For example, the Eldercare Directory can provide essential resources for senior citizens and their caregivers. Here’s another resource from the Maryland Health Care Commission. A little bit of research can go a long way when it comes to preparing for in-home care. Be sure to consider all of your options.

Medicaid. As the article notes, this may be the last option for many seniors, but should definitely be considered. There are a number of financial restrictions put in place that may or may not allow someone to qualify for Medicaid, but if you prepare ahead of time, there may be ways to handle these restrictions. Consulting someone who is an expert on Medicaid is advisable.

Veterans Benefits. Often overlooked, seniors who have served in the military, or have spouses who served in the military, should check with veteran’s offices for more information on the benefits available. These benefits can be considerable, so effort should be made to contact a person who is an advocate at the VA. This website provides information that might be helpful concerning Aid & Attendance Housebound benefits.

Life Insurance. Some policies provide help when it’s most needed – helping to pay for quality care as people get older. The money from these types of policies can help pay for in-home care, assisted living or even nursing home care.

Long-Term Care Insurance. If you currently  have long-term care insurance, be sure to understand exactly what the policy offers and when you should access the benefits it provides. If you currently do not have insurance, make sure you fully understand what you are buying and what the cost is to you.

Private Payment. The best way for in-home care, for many seniors, is to pay for it out of their own pocket. Understanding what is needed and how often is important to knowing exactly what the cost is for in-home care.

Reverse Mortgages. A reverse mortgage may be the best way to provide ready cash for in-home care. There are many types of reverse mortgages. This article from ConsumerAdvocate.org gives the 10 best reverse mortgages for 2021.

Bridge Loans and Annuities. Bridge loans provide money that is intended to last for a short period of time. Annuities can help pay for long term care in several ways. Consult your financial advisor for information on your particular annuities.

Proper planning can help make senior years easier and less stressful. Consider all your options and plan accordingly. For more information on in-home care on a temporary or more-permanent basis, contact our offices as these numbers: Maryland: 301-363-2580 or in VA at 703-556-8983.
