Why Seniors Should Receive Care at Home Instead of a Facility

When people enter their golden years, everyday living is often no longer as easy as it was before. Seniors may have given up their driving privileges, have trouble cooking for themselves, and/or feel unsafe when they bathe and shower. All of these can contribute to having a tougher time caring for oneself. In such a situation, elderly individuals need to have some form of assistance to ensure they are able to live safely.

Some elderly individuals will only need help on a part-time basis while others will need full-time assistance. Certain seniors have conditions where general elderly care services will not be sufficient. Instead, they require more specialized care, such as 24-hour home care, to ensure they receive proper help.

Family members, at times, can fill this void, but it is not always plausible. Elderly individuals may need help from qualified professionals.

No matter the case, it has become increasingly clear that seniors prefer to stay at home and receive care there instead of moving to some sort of facility. But personal preference is just one of several reasons why elderly individuals should receive home health care instead of moving to a facility.

1. Sense of Comfort

For many people, home is a safe place that provides them with comfort that cannot be matched by any other place or setting. So, while nursing homes and other assisted living facilities can offer the care seniors need, they do not necessarily provide the sense of contentment seniors crave. Furthermore, receiving elderly care at home can make it easier for some seniors to receive care and to live happier lives.

2. Maintain Their Freedom and Independence

When elderly individuals live at an assisted living facility, there are likely rules and regulations they have to follow. Although seniors live there, the place is not their own and they are not in charge. Seniors do not have the same freedom and independence they had when they lived at their own place. Such a situation can make people feel restricted or even frustrated, but this will not be the case with in-home elderly care.

With elderly care at home, seniors remain in control of their time and schedules. Their caregiver is simply there to provide help as needed. This sense of freedom can be empowering for elderly individuals and even benefit their mental health.

3. More Attentive, Personalized Care

With elderly care at home, the caregiver gives all their attention to your elderly loved one, so seniors receive individualized care. The same cannot always be said for assisted living facilities.

At care facilities, employees have numerous individuals to care for. That said, they cannot devote too much time to one person without neglecting the needs of others. Because of this, seniors may not get the personalized care they need from a facility.

Furthermore, home health care services are customized to meet seniors’ needs. To begin home care services, the client’s care needs will be evaluated. Using the information from the assessment, a care plan will be developed. This ensures that care is catered to the unique needs of each client so that they are properly cared for.

4. Companionship

Caregivers will do more than just provide assistance to your elderly relatives. They will also be a friend and provide them with companionship.

It is not uncommon for seniors to experience feelings of loneliness. This can especially be the case if elderly individuals have lost their partner or do not live near their family and friends. This loneliness can then transform into depression. With a home caregiver, seniors will have someone to talk to, spend time with, and do activities with.
