10 Simple Ways Houston Seniors Can Stay Healthy & Strong

The aging process can take a toll on the body, which is why seniors are more prone to health problems than younger people. As people get older, they usually need to visit the doctor and dentist more often. They may also take more medications. If you are a caregiver for a senior, it is important to learn about the steps that will help keep them healthy. This is particularly true for people who have existing health problems.

Adopting good health habits at a young age is the best way to stave off health problems as a senior. No matter how old someone is, however, they can always start taking better care of their health. Certain habits can have a positive impact on the health of seniors, even if they are currently suffering from an illness or if they previously neglected their health.

The following section includes ten tips on how seniors can stay healthy and strong as they age:

1. Focus On Nutrition

As people get older, they begin to digest food more slowly. That is why it is so important to eat a diet that includes foods that are high in fiber. Good choices include whole grains, vegetables, and fruit. Dehydration is common in seniors, as well. Drinking enough water is an excellent way to maintain better alertness and energy throughout the day.

2. Be Proactive About Preventative Care

Most health problems are the easiest to treat when they are caught early. Fortunately, modern medicine offers a number of tests and screening processes that can check for everything from heart disease and colon cancer to high cholesterol. These tests are almost always covered by Medicare. Vaccinations are also essential for seniors since they help prevent problems like pneumonia and influenza.

3. Learn How To Properly Manage Medication

Most seniors take a number of different prescription drugs. It is important to review the list of prescriptions frequently, checking with their doctor to ensure that there aren’t any interactions. If they develop any symptoms, it is also important to make sure that they aren’t a side effect of one of the medications that they are taking.

4. Get Enough Sleep

Most seniors have trouble sleeping through the night. Dimming the lights in the evening is a great way to help someone feel sleepier. Creating the right environment for sleep can also make a big difference. Keep the bedroom cool and comfortable while eliminating as much noise as possible.

5. Focus On Keeping The Mind Sharp

According to the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation, seniors can benefit from participating in activities that stimulate their brains and allow them to interact with their environment. Examples of activities that they may enjoy include reading, writing, or doing crossword puzzles. Keeping the brain engaged like this can stave off cognitive decline.

6. Visit The Eye Doctor Regularly

Annual eye exams are important for seniors since their vision can change quite quickly. These exams help catch any problems with the eyes early on. Wearing the right prescription glasses can minimize the risk of falling.

7. Stay Socially Active

Spending time with friends and family members can do wonders for the mental well-being of a senior. This is particularly true for seniors with mobility problems who may not be able to get out and see other people on their own.

8. Get Exercise

Being more active can help prevent problems with depression while at the same time increasing energy levels and improving memory. Work with a doctor to come up with an appropriate exercise routine. Walking is a great option at any age.

Seniors who are in relatively good health and who can move around easily can do more for themselves, which can take some of the strain off of their caregivers.

9. Make An Appointment For A Free Physical

For 12 months after senior signs up for Medicare, they can schedule an appointment for a free physical. During each following year, they are eligible for a free annual wellness exam.

10. See The Dentist Twice A Year

Cavities are more likely to occur as people age. Gum disease and other infections in the mouth can contribute to major health problems like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Seeing the dentist on a regular basis is the best way to prevent problems like these.
